VISION, MISSION AND WAY

Invitation Letter to Fellow Learners

Dear visitor and prospective E4L ENGLISH4LIFE co-learner,

Welcome! I hope this message finds you in wonderful health and spirit.

Thank you for visiting the E4L ENGLISH4LIFE website, a portal intended to offer you the opportunity to grow into a more fulfilling life by way of the wonder of language and the love of learning. As fellow human beings, we are endowed with precious gifts that demand awareness, intentionality, appreciation, loving care and embodied responsibility. While this can seem daunting, it is also wonderful. So why settle for the superficial and the artificial counterfeits of learning, language, and communication, when you can discover the wonder of authentic integral human learning and communication for a more fulfilling life?

I invite you to come and discover how E4L ENGLISH4LIFE can help you detect, identify, and unlearn the false assumptions and unhealthy habits that may have held you back from excellence in learning and from living a meaningful life. Come and learn to see through the blind spots and break free of the straitjackets and debilitating ploys that — under the name of “foreign languages”, “learning” and “education” — have misled and estranged countless learners from savoring the wonder of language, learning, and life, and have instead disabled, discouraged, and disempowered them. There is no time to lose. The time is ripe, so let us not miss this golden opportunity to grow together.

Do not settle any longer for gilded imitations of learning that fail to honor your inalienable integrity and witness your innate human ability. Break the chains and transcend the dehumanizing double bind; namely, a.) human behavior that has submitted itself to infrahuman robotic behavior in word and act so that you are expected to function merely as a “performance machine”, and b.) machines devoid of humanness that artificially, under the pretense of "intelligence", are optimized to “appear” more and more “human” and simulate humanity without actually being human. Both of these troubling tendencies — i.e., human beings continually losing their sense of humanness and behaving in more infra-human ways and non-human machines coming to appear more and more “human” — are deviations from authentic ways of being truly human and the concomitant paths of learning that enable, encourage, and empower the discovery and cultivation of what being true to one’s humanity may actually mean. Both misguided and misleading distortions mentioned above rob you of the opportunity to discover who you truly are and grow into human excellence. Both of them keep you from unlocking and developing the two greatest gifts with which you have been endowed — your core intellect and your willpower — and thus threaten to undermine your quest to discover the meaning of the life you have been granted and thereby to dignity and savor its reality.

Together, your intellect and will are the two great gifts (or wings) that configure your life’s wondrous quest, a quest which will demand the discovery and development of your vision and your action. More specifically, this means the refinement and maturation of your singularly unique sense of awareness, insight, appreciation, care, responsibility, and life of action so that you may take flight and become who you truly are. Your truly real intelligence and your truly real willpower have been granted to you so that in their realization and harmonious interplay, you may come to live a wholesome life of integrity unto fulfillment and contribute in meaningful ways to the improvement of the condition of those around you. In other words, the radiance of integrity longs to shine through you in life-enriching ways. The voice of vocation longs to be spoken through your life. The great and precious gifts of the heart-intellect and willpower are not granted to us to be squandered or buried alive. And they are not to be taken hostage or subjugated to the “realistic” shadows of their all too gilded simulations. No. They are to be discovered, appreciated, cared for, dignified and savored — realized for what they are and given their just right — by the very human beings whose integrity is inviolable, immeasurable, and priceless — that is, by me and by you and by us all.

The calling to be true to oneself — by discovering who one truly is and being true to this true self — is a shared universal calling. Being true to oneself — growing into and living a life of integrity — matters. Integral vocational lives matter! And although each one of us is called to listen, hear, and follow this voice of vocation in his or her own particular way given our unique set of circumstances, our essential calling can neither be refused nor outsourced. As a human being who bears such great potential and is gifted with heart-intellect and willpower among other things, I cannot not be obligated to be truly human by seeking to fulfill this innate potential. And neither can I get someone or something else fulfill my life’s vocation — i.e., to be truly human — for me. It is my singularly unique and inalienable human calling, obligation, gift, and right to be truly human. It is a calling to which I am able to respond, to which I should respond, and to which I must respond. And it is precisely in this being called into question and in this being invited tolive the quest in question — namely, “Who am I, really?” — that the mystery of my responsibility — my response-ability — lies and unveils itself. This is my obligation of obligations; this is my right of rights; my essential calling and quest. And nothing less than actually venturing upon my life’s wondrous quest of discovery is will do to attain its fulfilment!

Countless capable learners have been routinely misled and fail to witness the wonder of language, learning, and life, thus missing this paradoxical “obligation-opportunity” to be true to their calling. On the one hand, the notion of “foreign language” has made myriad learners believe that language learning is nothing but a set of unfortunate and nonsensical formal expectations imposed on them by various educational institutions; one that lacks true purpose, meaning, and use, and is thus “pointless”. On the other hand, legions have succumbed to misguided ambition, imagining language to be nothing but a dead, de-spirited tool or resource to be exploited, transmuted, “mastered” and twisted so as to put it to “good functionalist use”, so that language is commanded to do the bidding of their self-serving, expedient political and business agendas, among other things. This latter group cannot view or engage with language in any other way than mere utility, and in doing so, “use” is turned into either unconscious mis-use or malevolent abuse. And then there are those who are neither neglectful and dismissive of language and learning like the first camp nor selfish and manipulative like the second, but who have lost heart. They are those for whom another language is imagined to be so “foreign” that the prospect of setting out in pursuit of it — not to mention ever coming even close to its shores — triggers anxiety, insecurity, and reluctance, and eventually becomes a hopeless and unimaginable burden which they done their best to avoid and evade. This group often gives up even before having started the journey.

Now in all such cases (and countless more), a host of false assumptions — among them, that the language one is encountering is a “foreign language”; that learning is what one does at school or university to get grades but that there is no inherent value in it or that learning is and can only be the servile mechanism for gaining money, power, and influence; and/or that as a human being, it doesn’t matter who one is and what one does, and that one is not really obligated to discover one’s true nature and has the “freedom” to forfeit to outsource this if one wishes… and all that follows from these troubling illusions — has had staggering consequences, diverting our potential as fellow human beings and preventing us from discovering the wonder of language, cultivating the love of learning, and living a life truly worth living. In one word, the impairment of our core intellect and willpower has unleashed and exacerbated dehumanization.

Perhaps you or those you know have succumbed to one or more of the siren calls described above. Perhaps you feel that you have been blown off course or have gotten entangled in modes of thought, communication, and life that are not organic, transformational, authentic, or integral and are showing themselves to be dehumanizing. And perhaps there remains some measure of cynicism, stubbornness, reluctance, confusion, or anxiety that is hard to shake. Or perhaps you feel disoriented and overwhelmed, realizing that although you would would love to learn and think with greater clarity and to communicate with greater confidence, fluency, and empathy and live your life with greater authenticity, you just can’t do it, given your constraints; and you just don’t know why this is so or what to do.

Regardless of whether or why you believe you have not (truly) embarked on (or made much progress on) the path of discovering the wonder of language, cultivating the love of learning, and committing yourself to living a life worth living, do not despair. There is a way! That is precisely why E4L ENGLISH4LIFE is here — to help you let go of the misguided and misleading three-fold illusions that have distanced or diverted you from the wonder of language, the love of learning, and the dignity of life.
