Let go of the misguided notion of English as a "foreign language”. This has already misled countless capable learners from witnessing the wonder of language, learning, and life and being true to their calling. On the one hand, the notion of “foreign language” has made myriad learners believe that language learning is nothing but an unfortunate and nonsensical formal expectations imposed by educational institutions; one that lacks true purpose, meaning, and use, and is thus “pointless”. On the other hand, legions have succumbed to misguided ambition, imagining language to be nothing but a functional, utilitarian tool to be exploited, tamed, mastered and twisted so that it does the bidding of their self-serving political and business agendas. And then there are those who were neither neglectful and dismissive nor selfish and manipulative in their approach to language and learning, but who lost heart; those for whom another language was so “foreign” that the prospect of ever coming close to its shores triggered anxiety, insecurity, and reluctance, and eventually became hopeless and unimaginable.

In all such cases (and countless more), the false assumption that the language one is encountering is a “foreign language” (and all that follows from this) has staggering consequences, diverting the language’s potential loving, knowing friends, blowing them off course and even (mis)leading them into catastrophe. Why? For the simple reason that the various languages one has acquired are all means for the realization of who one truly is, and to set them up against one another and call some “foreign” and then proceed to lead a misguided and troubled relationship with them only leads to further estrangement from the wholesome engagement with the fullness of life to which we are called.

So, as a professional with more than 25 years of experience in the capacity of a teacher, pedagogue, education consultant, university instructor, proofreader and editor — not to mention a lifelong learner who happens to navigate the waters of life via the English language — I humbly offer the following advice: don’t “learn” English as a “foreign” language. Instead, open up and get to know English as a wonderful language, embracing it as a lifelong companion and friend, as a wondrous gateway through which you can come to know who you truly are and thrive in the various domains of your life, ranging from the personal to the familial to the social to the professional! Do not alienate yourself from language, learning and life, and do not alienate them from yourself. Get to know one another in a truly humble, wondrous and beautiful way!
